Just used Skype for the first time to call someone in New York to say a big thank you for the use of her apartment during my stay. I have used Skype several times recently to allow me to make voice calls to Ultranauts (computer to computer) using just the Internet and an application called Skype. Available for Windows PC's, Apple Mac OS X, Linux and Pocket PC.
It's a great little application, I think it beats Apple's iChat for voice calls without a doubt, and the really nice thing is that it allows computer users to make a call to a normal telephone number too - although you need to buy Skype credit for this. I've just bought 10 euros worth (about £6.80).
I can now make international / national / local telephone calls from my computer to any landline phone for the cost of about 1.1 pence which is just incredible I think. Sound quality is fantastic. Depending on your computer, you will of course need a microphone (internal or external) and preferably a set of headphones to prevent echoes created by the other persons voice being picked up by your microphone and then sent back to them.
Apparently, Skype are working on a solution that allows landline telephone users to call those who are online using their computers. When this happens, I will re-evaluate the need for my landline telephone - paying monthly line rental and call usage on top of that.
Well worth a play at least.

i don't know if it is the same in your country but in Canada you don't need an actual functioning telephone just the lines runing to your house and they do what is called a "dry loop" which allows for internet but no phone service. With that you are not charged for the telepnone service only your internet. One charge only. I recently got skype here but it is at a flat rate of 12.50 pounds for twelve months of service to Canada and the United States. Hope the "dry loop" thing helps.

I am one lucky person who has 2 promo packs from skype. Each pack includes a headset [alas, it only has one earbud], one installation CD, and a voucher. Each voucher is valid for 30 min. talk time and is valid until Dec 31, 2006!
I ought to to take a photo of the packages... My mother brought back 6 of these promo packs after vacationing in Mexico on a cruise liner. Hee!
Well anyway I read from Wikipedia they have sales targets to meet so that is the reason they're doing these promos.
