Orion Online website goes live

A screenshot of the Orion Online websiteThe Christmas break has given me the chance to do lots of the things I've really wanted to get done, but just haven't had a moment to achieve. One of which is the 3rd Billericay Scout Troop website, called Orion Online.

It was started 10 years ago although it has recently had a period where it wasn't active. The hold up as been that before making active again, I've wanted to use a different website engine or CMS (content management system) so that it makes contributing to the site as easy as possible. This is now done and I've added some useful tools such as a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor besides many others. You now don't need a PhD in Astro-Physics to create content and publish it to the world, much like many of the others sites I've built in recent years. In fact, children as young as 5 years old have used this technology and have been successful with it.

There is much more content to add, so much of it was out of date, but as with all websites they are never "finished" only work in progress as they contain more and more content and support the users better. We've long had a history of our Scouts visiting a research lab in Chelmsford in order to use their computer facilities for updating the website. That organisation has since closed, so we are looking for an alternative location where we could have access to computers with Internet access. It's a great activity for Scouts during the Winter months particularly when then 'OUT' in Scouting is more difficult to achieve. Please do get in contact if you are able to offer such a space.

World Jamboree comes to the UK, Essex

Well, it's been a pretty hectic start to the Summer break, nice really and they say a change is as good as a rest.

Today, International Scouts from the World Jamboree held in Chelmsford, Essex, headed over to Billericay to begin the first of a four day project to support our community.

Here are two Scout leaders from Brazil, Rodrigo and Jhonatan (Jonathan!) who I met and spoke excellent English (phew!)

Some 40 or so Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from the United States, Ireland, Netherlands, Mexico arrived on a coach to take part in the activities today. Scouts from 3rd Billericay, Orion Troop also came along to make new friends and join in with the International Scouting network.

Deutz Engine Screensaver - download animated construction of a motor engine

Our Scout unit are working towards their Mechanics badge. One of the parents, Mike, works at Ford Motor Company and brought this rather cool screensaver along yesterday evening. The screensaver takes the viewer through the various parts of a motor engine as you watch it being constructed in front of you.

Sadly, the screensaver is for Windows PC's only... Watch the Flash animation and download the Deutz Engine screensaver.

I wonder if there is a tool to construct Screensavers for Mac OS X from Flash movies?

You can now download the excellent screensaver from this site.

Please keep this service running.

Due to the enormous interest in downloading this screensaver from this site and the large amount of traffic coming to my server host, I would really appreciate a donation towards the hosting costs of this service. Many thanks for your understanding.

There is another animated construction of an engine, this time a diesel engine made by Perkins which can be downloaded from this website. Download the Perkins 3D diesel engine animation.

Now Get Out Of That - Scout Day Hike

Five boys from our scout unit, 3rd Billericay Orion Troop took part in the annual Now Get Out Of That district hiking event. This is an opportunity for boys to practice and demonstrate their map reading and on-the-ground navigation skills during a short 6 mile hike. Apart from the rather tricky navigation, the scouts have to prepare and cook a hot meal for lunch - our boys opted for a pasta dish in a bolognese sauce. Leaders were stationed at checkpoints along the route to monitor the boys progress.

It was a very satisfying experience watching the boys demonstrate all they know and understand with maps, compasses and grid references. Although this wasn't a competition, nor was it a race, our boys made it to the finish first despite being the second from last group to set off. They set themselves a consistent walking pace and showed great maturity. Well done!
